Networking events
A great way to learn more about your area of work and/or industry is to attend networking events. Whether you’re simply wanting to learn about a trending topic in your industry or looking to increase your company’s brand awareness, networking events are a great way to connect with other passionate professionals. Agile Transformation based networking events are a trending topic for Project Delivery themed events, for example.
It’s all about connections
Following on from our previous blog regarding referrals, you never know what a simple introduction with another person working in the same industry can do for you. This same person could end up being your colleague or even business partner one day, either through your referral to your manager or their referral to their manager.
Don’t be shy about approaching people! Whether they’re there for the presentation or marketing their brand (or even the free pizza) they know what they signed up for.
What to talk about?
These events are quite often after work and even though they might be related to a certain topic relevant to your job, not everyone might be as enthusiastic to discuss their company’s future plans.
If the event has a speaker presenting a topic, a great ‘ice breaker’ could be to ask someone what they thought about the presentation. Following this you can find out more about their motives for attending and their area of work and industry. However, be sure to keep the conversation light-hearted and ensure you make a note (on your phone perhaps) of their name and company to follow up after the event with a friendly message via LinkedIn/email.
As stated previously, a stranger you meet at an event could be your colleague and/or business partner one day!
